We drove Amber's black '93 SE to Dallas and back this weekend. For the most part the car worked fine.
While my lazy butt waited to put in the steering rack the car sat without being started since I knew the power steering pump would have no fluid. During this time the battery died. I properly charged it before starting the car after the job.
The afternoon before we left (and she didn't tell me this until it happened in my presence on the trip) the car refused to start. She waited a moment and tried to start it again with success. About 265 miles into the trip, 1/2 hour from our hotel, we stopped for gas or something. It refused to start. We bump started it and got to our hotel. The next morning it started as though nothing was wrong. In fact, the rest of the day it worked fine. Today it started fine and we started for home. At nearly every stop afterward we had to bump start it.
Now, even though it wouldn't start the interior fan, lights and radio worked great.
I'm thinking either the starter solenoid or the battery, about 18 months old, doesn't like to work when hot.
What do you guys think?
Part two: I rotated the tires on both cars for the first time. The tires are the same model and about the same age and were not rotated until over a year old. Now both cars are experiencing severe vibration at freeway speeds. Do we think they're ruined?

Quite a road trip. Your sister is still out there, right?

I'd definitely check all the starter wiring and the starter first. Doesn't sound like a battery problem to me, but might not hurt to get it checked while it is still in warranty.

I wouldn't think they are ruined. They might not be showing the most even tread wear, but not rotating them should not have harmed the integrity of the tire. They probably just need to be balanced. |

Sister in Houston. Uncle and grandparents in Dallas. Grandfather turned 95.
I'm thinking solenoid.
I've had the vibration problem before with tires that weren't rotated on a regular basis. I think the belts are "used" to being at a certain pressure and orientation. Maybe.

She has not reported another incident. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened. She sometimes forgets to tell me these things.
At least my tires seem to have calmed down.
