Well, I got lucky on one item I took apart today. The laptop I bought for a song on eBay had a bad screen. I bought a replacement for a great price and put the two together. In the meantime I bought a couple of new parts for the old screen. Today I finally mated the new data cable with the old screen and installed it successfully. Now I have something of decent value to sell on eBay.

That was the only success I had. The Compaq Presario M2000 has a bad motherboard I believe. No amount of disassembly, however, revealed a specific part to be burned up or torn. Oh well, I now have three laptops in my posession with bad motherboards. At least one will boot but only last a brief time. Too bad it's only a PIII. That alone makes it not worth the trouble finding the needle in the haystack (KDS parts are nearly invisible). The M2000 and Satellite don't light LEDs showing they're recieving power. The Satellite mainboard will cost ~$200-220 bare. Ouch! The Compaq B130 Just needs a new screen.

Ugh, I really need to say no to people who want me to fix their computers.

No, as I've learned, never say "no," only say "more..."

...As in, "I'll fix that for you, but it will cost more."

Seriously, I've done that with a lot of auto repairs. If I don't feel like doing something, I'll just quote a high price. Many times, the people look elsewhere, but every once in a while, they agree to it and I end up making pretty decent money, which (sometimes) makes a PITA job worth the time.

So, what is the laptop that you are planning on selling on eBay?

Just the replacement screen since I've repaired mine, although the KDS Valiant 6480 (PIII 800 MHz embedded) with the semi-bad motherboard is a candidate. I'm probably going to repair the Dell Inspiron B130 and the Compaq M2000 at a later date/ when I get the money.

Guess I need to learn how to insert an auction now.

Don't feel bad--I had to brush up on how to list, myself. It has been a while since I've done any active listing. For a while, now, I've just let my auto-re-list through my eBay store do it. It seems that a few things have changed since the last time I paid much attention to it.

I'd like to get a laptop, but not anytime too soon.

I have to get some money together to get a motherboard and screen. They're not horribly expensive, but I'm broke for a week or two.

Ordered a screen for the Dell Inspiron B130 yesterday. It should be here in a few days. Though not an exact replacement it should actually be better. I got a glossy one instead of a matt one. I've found I like them better indoors. I think it'll also be better for resale. Not sure what the CPU is beyond the fact its a P4. Not a bad laptop for its price range.

Screen in and functioning quite well. Wish I could test the wireless. There is something wrong with my home router, Linksys WRT54G. Oh well.

Hey, at least you know the screen is working well.

So, have you sold the other one yet?

My listings are starting to pick up a bit now, of course, I'm not selling anything computer-related.

Nope, the one with the new screen is the first one I"m selling. The second should have it's new motherboard any day now.

Local newspaper has ad to fill out for three lines for free on objects worth less than X dollars. These qualify.

Ahhh, the sweet smell of success! The Compaq M2000 has a "new" motherboard and processor. I swapped in a CPU from another project to give it a small boost (1.3 to 1.6 GHz) and all works well.

Sweet!

Someday, not today, but someday, I will get myself a laptop. I'm just too busy collecting every air tool under the sun right now...
